- This day was established by the UNGA on December 8, 2016, in memory of Chernobyl disaster.
- It is observed in memory and honour of those who lost their lives.
- The Chernobyl disaster took place on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in the former Soviet Union.
- The accident took place during a routine safety test of a nuclear reactor.
