- It aims to raise awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions.
- It was observed for first time in 2010 and since then observed annually to galvanize necessity of banning nuclear weapon tests.
- It commemorates closure of Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site of Kazakhstan (also known as The Polygon) on 29 August 1991.
