- The anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity was designated as the International Day for Biological Diversity on December 29, 1993.
- However, in December 2000, the date was changed to May 22 by the United Nations General Assembly.
- This day aims to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
