- The International day for the eradication of poverty is observed every year on October 17.
- In 1992, the United Nations officially designated October 17 as poverty eradication day in memory of Father Joseph Wresinski.
- He had fought against poverty and social exclusion all through his life and launched the day originally in 1987.
- The global extreme poverty rates have dropped from 36 per cent in 1990 to 8.6 per cent in 2018.
- The theme of 2019 observance is “Acting together to empower children, their families and communities to end poverty”.
