- This annual event aims to raise awareness of the dangers posed by Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing to the marine ecosystem.
- In 1995, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) convened a conference where a code of conduct was adopted to conserve aquatic ecosystems.
- On 5 December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution for this day
- Almost 32% of seafood imported into the United States is unlawfully caught.
- 39% of fish populations in the North-East Atlantic and adjacent waters are deemed overfished.
- In the past 40 years, marine species have decreased by 39%.
