The day is observed to memorialise the practice against millions of innocent lives who were the victims of the transatlantic slave trade during colonial rule.
The day was given its first importance by UNESCO.
The international slave trade was first eradicated in the year 1807.
The day was first observed in countries like Haiti (August 23, 1998) and Goree Island in Senegal (August 23, 1999).
The theme for this year's is 'Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism'.
