- The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for Tolerance is annually observed on November 16 to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help them understand the negative effects of intolerance.
- In 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of UNESCO which was established in 1945, UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution to observe the International Day for Tolerance. From 1996 the International Day for Tolerance was started to observe on November 16.
- In 1995, to mark the United Nations Year for Tolerance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, UNESCO created a prize for the promotion of tolerance and non-violence.
- The UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence is awarded every two years on the International Day for Tolerance, 16 November.
- The Prize may be awarded to institutions, organizations or persons, who have contributed in a particularly meritorious and effective manner to tolerance and non-violence.
