- The UN General Assembly proclaimed this day on 12 December 1997.
- This day marks the moment in 1987 when the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.
- In 1975, the General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Being Subjected to Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
- The United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture was established by the General Assembly in 1981.
- The first Special Rapporteur on torture was appointed by the Commission on Human Rights in 1985.
- In 2002, the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture was adopted.
