- The theme for 2023 “Reducing food loss and waste: Taking Action to Transform Food Systems”.
- According to the UN FAO, a staggering 1.3 billion tonnes of food being wasted annually costs the world about $750 billion.
- 61 percent of food waste comes from households, 26 percent from food services and 13 percent from retail.
- Globally, food waste contributes roughly 20 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
- It is a third of all human-contributed gas emissions.
- India's contribution to wasted food, at 68.8 million tonnes annually, is 7 percent of the global total.
- Up to 40 percent of the food produced in India is wasted, adding up to nearly Rs 50,000 crores worth of wasted food.
