- This day aims to highlight the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and harmony among people from diverse backgrounds.
- In 1997, the General Assembly proclaimed the year 2000 as the “International Year for a Culture of Peace".
- The next year, it declared that the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for Children of the World" will be observed from 2001-10.
- The adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace in 1999 further emphasised the need for sustained peace and non-violence.
