In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day to honour Gandhi's principles.
The day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness".
It reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat.
In 1930, Gandhi was named the Person of the Year by Time Magazine.
