The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is annually observed on November 29.
The occasion marks the adoption by the General Assembly of resolution 181 (II) on 29 November 1947 partitioning the British mandate of Palestine into two States.
This year’s observance marks 50 years since the start of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
The resolution recommended the creation of independent Arab and Jewish States and a Special International Regime for the city of Jerusalem.
Mandatory Palestine was a geopolitical entity under British administration, carved out of Ottoman Southern Syria after World War I.
British civil administration in Palestine operated from 1920 until 1948.
