  • The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is annually observed on November 29.
  • The occasion marks the adoption by the General Assembly of resolution 181 (II) on 29 November 1947 partitioning the British mandate of Palestine into two States.
  • This year’s observance marks 50 years since the start of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
  • The resolution recommended the creation of independent Arab and Jewish States and a Special International Regime for the city of Jerusalem.
  • Mandatory Palestine was a geopolitical entity under British administration, carved out of Ottoman Southern Syria after World War I.
  • British civil administration in Palestine operated from 1920 until 1948.
