The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed across the world on August 9.
Its aim is to strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous peoples in areas such as human rights, the environment, education, health and social development.
The theme of the 2018 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was ‘Indigenous peoples’ migration and movement’.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through its Resolution on ‘Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ proclaimed the year 2019 as the ‘International Year of Indigenous Languages’.
The UNGA on December 23, 1994, proclaimed 9 August as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples through its resolution.
The date marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
