International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples – 09 August

  • The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed across the world on August 9.
  • Its aim is to strengthen international cooperation for solving problems faced by indigenous peoples in areas such as human rights, the environment, education, health and social development.
  • The theme of the 2018 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was ‘Indigenous peoples’ migration and movement’.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through its Resolution on ‘Rights of Indigenous Peoples’ proclaimed the year 2019 as the ‘International Year of Indigenous Languages’.
  • The UNGA on December 23, 1994, proclaimed 9 August as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples through its resolution.
  • The date marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
