  • Joint theatre commands of tri-services would be set up to enhance coordination among armed forces.
  • It is a concept which seeks to integrate the capabilities of the three services - army, air force and navy.
  • It aims to optimally utilise their resources for wars and operations.
  • The Theatre Commander will be a three-star general, drawn from any of the three services, depending on the function assigned.
  • At present, there are two joint services commands in India, the first one is Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) and the second, being Strategic Forces Command (SFC).
  • ANC is considered to be the only one of its kind in the country that amalgamates the army, navy and air force.
  • Set up in 2001, ANC is based in Port Blair.
  • SFC takes care of the nuclear assets of India and is not related to any specific theatre of war.
