- Kerala government plans to transform the state’s legendary and historically-significant ‘vallamkali’ (snake boat races) into a world-class sporting event.
- It aims to conduct Champions Boat League (CBL) on the lines of IPL tournament.
- The snake boat or ‘chundam vallam’ is a long canoe that can seat up to 100 rowers and 100 to 138 feet in length.
- These boats were used in 13th century for battles in Alleppey’s backwaters.
