- Indian chess Grand Master and five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand won bronze at the King Salman World Blitz Championship at Riyadh.
- Anand won against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France. Anand’s only loss in the championship was to the Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi.
- It was World Champion grandmaster Magnus Carlsen who won the tournament, by defeating Anton Korobov of Ukraine.
- The women’s title was won by Nana Dzanigdze of Georgia, who drew with Elina Danielian of Armenia in the final round.
Viswanathan Anand
- Viswanathan Anand became India’s first grandmaster in 1988. He is first Asian to win FIDE World Chess Championship from 2000 to 2002.
- He is the first recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991, India’s highest sporting honour.
- In 2007, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan India’s second highest civilian award, making him first sportsperson to receive award.
