  • The Union cabinet has approved the Labour Code on Industrial Relations 2019.
  • It ‘allows’ companies to hire workers on fixed-term contract of any duration.
  • The Bill proposes giving a legal framework for fixed-term employment.
  • Under new rules, contract workers serving a fixed-tenure will get equal statutory social security benefits as regular workers in the same unit.
  • Factories with upto 100 workers need to take government’s permission to retrench, lay off or shut shop.
