Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse (LOTUS-HR)

  • The second phase of an Indo-Dutch project called Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse, was launched at in New Delhi by the Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan and the Dutch Royal couple, Netherlands King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.
  • The Dutch Royal couple is on a five-day visit to India at the invitation of President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • This trip will be King Willem-Alexander’s first state visit to India following his ascension to the throne in 2013.
  • It is a water treatment laboratory that seeks to treat dirty water from Drain.
  • Technology being used in LOTUS-HR is called wetland technique.
  • It is jointly supported by Department of Biotechnology, under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology and Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.
  • Moreover, IIT-Delhi and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) are partners in this project.
