- The death anniversary of firebrand poet and freedom fighter Subramanya Bharathiar would be commemorated as ‘Mahakavi’ Day on September 11.
- The Chief Minister MK Stalin announced this on the occasion of 100th death anniversary of Bharathi.
- A compilation of Bharati's poems and essays would be brought out in a book titled "Manathil Urithi Vendum" (Firmness in Mind).
- Events with the theme 'parengum Bharati' (Bharati everywhere), in collaboration with the World Tamil Associations would be organised.
- A separate wing 'Bharathiyal' would be set up to compile the books of Bharathiar.
- The Women Livelihood Mission, implemented by the rural development department, will be named by Bharatiya.
- “Bharati young poet Award’’ will be presented through a state-level poetry competition for school and college students.
- Financial assistance will be given to maintain the house at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh where Bharathi lived a century ago.
- PM Modi has announced that the Benares Hindu University in Varanasi would have a chair of Tamil Studies in memory of Bharathi.
- Modi also said, "India is proud to be home to the world's oldest language, Tamil."
About Bharathi
- Bharathi was also the first Asian poet to sing the glory of the 1917 Russian Revolution or Bolshevik revolution.
- Subramanya Bharati had to flee to Puducherry (a French colony then) in 1908 to avoid arrest by the British government.
- He worked as the assistant editor in Swadesa mitran newspaper.
- Bharathi passed away on September 11th in 1921 at Chennai.
- He delivered his last speech at Karungalpalayam Library in Erode.
- The last years of his life were spent in a house in Triplicane, Chennai.
- The Former CM CN Annadurai was the first to call Bharathiyar ‘Makkal Kavi’ (poet of the people).
- Va.Ra wrote a classic Tamil biography on the greatest poet of all time, “Mahakavi Bharatiyar”.
