Mangrove pitta bird census

  • The first-ever census of mangrove pitta birds was carried out in Kendrapara and Jagatsingpur districts of Odisha.
  • 179 such birds were sighted during the census.
  • The highest concentration of the birds has been found in the mangroves near the Mahipura river mouth inside the Bhitarakanika National Park.
  • Mangrove pitta birds are a nearly threatened species found in few pockets of eastern India.
  • It includes Odisha’s Bhitarakanika and West Bengal’s Sundarbans.
