- US President Joe Biden has called the massacre of Armenians during the World War I as genocide.
- He is the first US president to describe the atrocities on Armenians in 1915 as such.
- Turkey acknowledges the atrocities but reject the term genocide.
Background
- The Ottoman Empire suffered a humiliating defeat in the Caucasus in 1915 at the hands of the Russians.
- The Turks accused the Armenians of treachery.
- Therefore the Armenian soldiers, public intellectuals and writers were executed.
- Hundreds of thousands of Armenians, including children, were forcibly moved to the Syrian desert.
- Many died during this exodus and many others, after reaching the concentration camps in the deserts.
- Between 1915 to 1922, in the First World War, thousands of Armenians perished due to killings, starvation and disease.
