Membership of UNESCO Committee

  • India has been elected to the intergovernmental committee of UNESCO's 2003 convention for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • The Intergovernmental Committee of 2003 Convention includes 24 members.
  • India will be a member for a period of 2022-2026.
  • In past, India has been a member of ICH Committee for two times viz., during 2006-2010 and 2014-2018.
  • The main functions of “Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage” include
    • Promoting the objectives of the convention
    • Providing directions on best practices and
    • Recommending on measures to safeguard intangible cultural heritage.
