Michael D Higgins re-elected as Irish president

  • Michael D Higgins has been re-elected as the president of Ireland, after winning 56% of the votes.
  • Mr Higgins is the first president to be re-elected to serve a second term in office since Éamon de Valera in 1966.
  • Mr Higgins, who has served as the country’s head of state since 2011, will now serve for another seven years.
  • Mr Higgins is Ireland’s ninth president.
