- Michael D Higgins has been re-elected as the president of Ireland, after winning 56% of the votes.
- Mr Higgins is the first president to be re-elected to serve a second term in office since Éamon de Valera in 1966.
- Mr Higgins, who has served as the country’s head of state since 2011, will now serve for another seven years.
- Mr Higgins is Ireland’s ninth president.
