In India it was first observed on December 18, 2013.
On December 18, 1992, the United Nations had declared the Statement on the Individual's Rights belonging to Religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities.
It is observed to safeguard the Constitutionally-guaranteed rights of religious minorities in the country.
In India, six religious communities have been notified as minorities.
These include Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists and Zoroastrians or Parsis and Jains (2014).
Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Lakshadweep are the only states where any notified minority is in majority.
The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) was established under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
