Mochi Swabhimaan Initiative – Leather Sector

  • The Skill Development ministry has announced the “Mochi Swabhimaan” Initiative.
  • Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC) is the coordinating agency.
  • Under this, the LSSC will assist the cobbler community in India for leather-based services, providing better working conditions.
  • LSSC also coordinates the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
  • PMKVY encourages skill development to boost employability and productivity of youth by incentivizing skill training.
  • India’s leather sector is the second largest leather garment and footwear producer globally.
  • It contributes 13% to the total leather production, globally.
  • It employs over 2.5 million people in India.
