- The World Health Organisation has declared the global monkeypox outbreak as a 'public health emergency of international concern' (PHEIC).
- It is one step below that of a 'pandemic.'
- On January 30, 2020, the organisation had categorised COVID-19 as a PHEIC.
- On March 11 that year, the agency elevated it to 'pandemic.'
- The PHEIC declaration is to be "temporary" and reviewed every three months.
- In the past, Ebola (2014), Zika virus (2016), H1N1(2009), the polio virus (2014) and Covid-19 have been declared a PHEIC.
