  • India's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) for the year 2018-20 was at 97.
  • In 2014-16, the MMR was 130, which has seen a steady decline since then.
  • Maternal mortality in a region is a measure of the reproductive health of women in the area.
  • It is defined as the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
  • Among the states, Assam recorded the highest MMR at 195 followed by Madhya Pradesh (173) and Uttar Pradesh (167).
  • Kerala has the lowest Maternal Mortality Ratio (19), and is followed by Maharashtra at 33 and Telangana at 43.
  • Tamilnadu stands at Fourth (54).
