  • The Fentale volcano in Ethiopia has emitted vast amounts of methane into the atmosphere.
  • Researchers have described this event as a “burp,” as the volcano expelled huge plumes of the potent greenhouse gas.
  • The volcano was emitting 58 metric tonnes of methane per hour.
  • Methane traps 28 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
  • It is the second-largest contributor to global warming.
  • It is responsible for around 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
  • Mount Fentale is not known for frequent eruptions.
  • The last recorded eruption occurred in 1820.
