- It is the first mountain warfare training facility in northeast India and its second overall.
- The first institution of its kind is the Mountaineering and Skiing Institute (M&SI), was opened in Auli, near Joshimath of Uttarakhand in 1973–74.
- The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is tasked with securing the Line of Actual Control with China.
