- As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, the first pandemic year, 2020, witnessed the highest number of suicides among the unemployed in the recent past.
- The suicide toll has crossed 3,000-mark for the first time.
- 3548 people died by suicide.
- As per NCRB data, in 2020, the highest number of suicides among the unemployed was reported from Karnataka.
- It is followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu (336), Assam, and Uttar Pradesh.
- While in suicides due to indebtedness or bankruptcy, Maharashtra topped the list with 1341 deaths.
- It is followed by Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu (524).
- Except for Tamil Nadu, other states usually account for most farmer suicides.
