- It commemorates the birth anniversary of India’s First Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served the country from 1947 to 1958 as the first minister of Education in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.
- As the first Education Minister of a free India, he was responsible for setting up of the Central Institute of Education in Delhi.
- Later this came to be known as the Department of Education under the University of Delhi.
- He was also responsible for setting up of University Grants Commission in 1953 and emphasized the setting up of Indian Institute of Science or IISc Bangalore.
