It commemorates the birth anniversary of India’s First Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad served the country from 1947 to 1958 as the first minister of Education in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.
As the first Education Minister of a free India, he was responsible for setting up of the Central Institute of Education in Delhi.
Later this came to be known as the Department of Education under the University of Delhi.
He was also responsible for setting up of University Grants Commission in 1953 and emphasized the setting up of Indian Institute of Science or IISc Bangalore.
