The Union health ministry has finalised the draft of the proposed Digital Information Security in Healthcare Act (DISHA).
It is a crucial step in establishing the National Electronic Health Authority (NeHA) which would function as an independent regulator.
NeHA is a nodal agency for creating regulatory framework and guidelines for interoperability and exchange of digital healthcare data in the country.
The authority will play a key role in promoting e-health standards by enforcing privacy and security measures and regulating storage and exchange of healthcare records.
This Act will also pave the way for the setting up of Health Information Exchanges.
The draft Digital Information Security in Healthcare Act enables people to have the right to privacy, confidentiality and security of their digital health data.
The NeHA will have the power to formulate standards, operational guidelines and protocols for the generation, collection, storage and transmission of the electric health records (EHR).
