- The day is dedicated to honour the brave souls who sacrificed their lives for protecting the country's forests, wildlife, and biodiversity.
- It was established to commemorate the Khejarli massacre 1730.
- During this event, Amrita Devi Bishnoi and over 350 members of the Bishnoi community laid down their lives to protect the Khejri trees.
- They opposed the orders of Maharaja Abhay Singh, who had instructed to cut down trees to construct his palace.
