- It is observed to commemorate the Khejarli massacre, which took place on September 11 in 1730.
- During the reign of Maharaja Abhay Singh in Rajasthan, it was ordered to cut down the Khejarli trees.
- Over 360 Bishnoi tribe members led by Amrita Devi protested the destruction of trees.
- In 2013, the Ministry of Environment and Forest announced officially announced the observation of this day.
- Moreover, the Chipko Movement was also inspired by this brave act of the people of Bishnoi community.
- The Chipko movement originated in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh) in 1973.
- The Gandhian social activist Chandi Prasad Bhatt led the first Chipko movement at Mandal village.
- Later this Movement gained traction under Sunder Lal Bahuguna, an eco-activist.
- Bahuguna is best remembered for the slogan “ecology is the permanent economy”.
