- It was started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008.
- It is being celebrated across the nation with objectives of generating awareness on the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and create a positive environment around valuing the girl child.
- India is observing National Girl Child Week 2021, which begins from January 21 and continues till January 26.
- The state of Punjab has announced January 2021 to be the "month of Girl Child".
- The theme for this is ‘transforming education for girls.
