- It is celebrated to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on the same date in 1905.
- The movement was launched in Calcutta Town Hall to protest against partition of Bengal by the British Government.
- It was first declared as National Handloom Day in 2015.
- It is being celebrated under the coordination of Ministry of Textiles.
