- The Lok Sabha has passed the National Investigation Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
- The following category of offences can also be investigated by NIA
- Human trafficking
- Offences related to counterfeit currency or bank notes
- Manufacture or sale of prohibited arms
- Cyber-terrorism
- Offences under the Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
- The officers of the NIA have the same powers as other police officers in relation to the investigation of such offences, across India.
- Designated special courts would be set up to expedite the cases and transfers / delay in appointments of judges would not delay them.
- The agency will be able to investigate terrorist acts against Indian embassies and assets abroad.
About NIA
- NIA was set up in 2008 to act as the Central Counter Terrorism Law Enforcement Agency.
- The agency is empowered to deal with terror related crimes across states without special permission from the states.
