National Minorities Rights – December 18

  • Its aim is to safeguard the individual rights of the religious, ethnic, racial, or linguistic minorities in the country.
  • The Union Government set up the National Commission for Minorities under the National Commission for Minorities Act 1992.
  • Following these five religious communities have been notified as minority communities in the Gazette of India by the Union Government all around the country.
  • These religious communities are Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, and Zoroastrians.
  • In 2014, Jains were also added to the list of religious communities considered as minority communities
  • The theme for 2022 is centred around “All in 4 Minority Rights”.
  • It was part of the commemoration of the 30-year anniversary of the UN Declaration being adopted.
  • The United Nations on December 18, 1992 adopted and broadcast the Statement on the individual's Rights belonging to Religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities.
  • Minority Rights Day upholds the right to freedom and equal opportunities for the minorities in India and creates awareness about their rights.
