- The Union Ministry of Culture is set to “revive and relaunch” the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM).
- It is also considering the formation of an autonomous body to help preserve ancient texts in India.
- Presently, NMM is a part of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts.
- The new body, likely to be named the National Manuscripts Authority, will be an autonomous entity under the Ministry.
- The NMM informed that till date a metadata of 52 lakh manuscripts has been prepared and roughly over 3 lakh titles have been digitised.
- Around 80% of manuscripts in India are with private parties.
