- This day is observed to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India (PCI) in 1966.
- It is a statutory body which was established to ensure the freedom of the press and to maintain and improve the standards of journalism.
- The quasi-judicial body was re-established in the year 1979 under the Press Council Act, 1978.
- The theme for 2023 is “Media in the Era of Artificial Intelligence”.
