- The successive natural calamities from 1990 to 2004 led to the enactment of the Disaster Management Act on December 26, 2005.
- The act formulated the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as the apex body for natural disasters.
- It also creates the NDRF as the specialised rescue force under the NDMA’s mandate.
