- Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was appointed as the next chief election commissioner (26th CEC).
- He is the first CEC to be appointed under a new law on the appointment of the members of the Election Commission (EC).
- Vivek Joshi assumed charge as an Election Commissioner.
- Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Act, 2023 empowers the govt to appoint CEC.
- He was appointed after a meeting of a three-member committee headed by Prime Minister.
- The selection committee consists of PM, Union home minister, and the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha.
- A CEC or an EC retires at the age of 65 or can serve in the panel for six years.
