- Veteran Karnataka leader Mallikarjun Kharge defeated his rival, Shashi Tharoor of Kerala.
- He is become the first non-Gandhi Congress president in 24 years.
- He is also the first Scheduled Caste chief of the grand old organization in four decades.
- This was the first election for the post of Congress president in 22 years and only the sixth major contest in the party’s 137-year history.

- Mahatma Gandhi's candidate Pattabhi Sitaramayya had lost to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
- Around 9,500 party delegates voted in the election.
- Kharge received 7,897 votes while Tharoor got 1,072 votes.
