- Tamil Nadu, in a first of its kind initiative in the nation, has started a new health programme ‘Prevention of Haemoglobinopathies’ in the Hilly areas.
- The initiative has been taken up in the Hilly areas of Nilgiris, Kolli Hills in Namakkal, Yercaud in Salem, Valparai in Coimbatore and Krishnagiri
- Hemoglobinopathies is a kind of genetic defect resulting in abnormal structure of one of the globin chains of haemoglobin molecule.
- This disease is mostly prevalent among the tribals in the hilly areas.
