New species of Cat snakes

  • A new species of snake called Thackeray’s Cat Snake (scientific name Boiga thackeray) has been found in Sahyadri tiger reserve in Koyna area of Maharashtra after 125 years.

  • This species usually falls in the category of cat snake or cat-eyed snakes and belongs to the genus Boiga.
  • These snakes belonging to this genus are found all over India, but some species are found only in the Western Ghats.
  • It was named after researcher Tejas Thackeray, son of Uddhav Thackeray.
