- A new species of gecko (lizards) belonging to the genus Hemidactylus was recently discovered from Mahendragiri hills in Andhra-Odisha border.
- The species was identified from few areas in northern Mahendragiri range and scattered coastal hills in northern Andhra Pradesh.
- This is the second gecko endemic to this hilly range and the third vertebrate found in India.
- The first one “House Lizard” was discovered from Kanger Ghati National Park in Chhattisgarh.
- The new species has been named Hemidactylus sushilduttai or Dutta’s Mahendragiri gecko, after eminent herpetologist Sushil Kumar Dutta from Odisha.
- The lizard is the 32nd species of Hemidactylus gecko found in India.
- Herpetology is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians and reptiles.
