New species of Orangutan identified

  • A new species of orangutan named Pongo tapanuliensis was identified in the Batang Toru forest in the Tapanuli districts of North Sumatra.
  • It’s the first great ape species to be described by scientists in nearly 90 years.
  • It is the most endangered great ape in world, with just 800 individuals are
  • Its skull, teeth and genes are different from the two other orangutan species.
  • Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) were first reported in the 1930s as an isolated population, but it wasn't until 2013 that scientists were able to confirm that the apes were in fact a different species from the other two extant orangutan species, the Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus) and Sumatran (Pongo abelii) orangutans.
