The ninth edition of the BRICS Summit happened in Xiamen, China on September 3,4 and 5. China hosted the summit for the second time since 2011.
BRICS leaders, Brazilian President Michel Temer, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Jacob Zuma, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the summit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of terrorism in the context of being an impediment to economic growth and prosperity
PM Modi and other BRICS leaders, through consensus, had adopted the Xiamen Declaration, which named Pakistan-based terror groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad in the segment on counter-terrorism and "concerns" on security situations.
China’s position on naming these terror groups in the final declaration is considered, given the fact that Beijing had nixed the very idea of reference to Pakistan-based terror groups at the Goa BRICS Summit in 2016 hosted by India.
The Conference was centered around the theme of ‘Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future’.
The 2018 BRICS summit is next the tenth annual BRICS summit. The summit will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa
