Researchers at IIT Bombay discover the role of environmental resources, genes and mating in species in the development of new species in the same area.
It was challenging the traditional view that new species can develop only in distinct geographies.
They found that the speciation, or the creation of new species, happen even when there are no physical obstacles.
Allopatric speciation is when physical barriers, like mountains or bodies of water, split populations, which leads to the creation of new species.
In contrast, sympatric speciation happens in the same area of land, where there are no such hurdles.
